Crafting Meaningful Reflections
OLTD 508: Mobile Technologies and Game Based Learning
Course Description:
Students will examine the underlying concepts driving the adoption of mobile and gaming technologies in education. This course will investigate potential devices/apps/games, issues (e.g., supporting infrastructure, management, digital divide), resource selection, integration in curriculum, and potential venues for creating mobile and/or gaming content for educational use.
Assignment # 2 –Developing an Evaluation Rubric For Selection of Mobile Apps
Learning Outcomes:

Assignment # 2 –Developing an Evaluation Rubric For Selection of Mobile Apps
Learning Outcomes:
- Develop and design intentional learning activities suitable for the appropriate mobile learning and gaming environments and the learner i.e. incorporation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and selection of strategies and resources appropriate for environment, learners and learning outcomes.
- Critically assess and evaluate resources for best practice in mobile learning and gaming environments.
- Create assessment and evaluate methods/tools most suitable to the strengths and challenges of the specific environment.
As outlined this was a group assignment. Breanne, Ben
and I decided to work together. We planned
an online meeting in Breanne’s collaborate classroom. This turned in to a true display of successful
mobile learning. At the time I was at a surprise birthday party so I retrieved
the Wi-Fi address, found a quiet space and connected with my iPad Mini. Together
we choose which evaluation rubrics we felt best met our needs and created our
rubric for evaluating apps. We then used
a shared Google doc to work on refining our rubric and answering the related
questions. The second part of the assignment involved working independently. I
choose the apps Explain Everything and Buzz Math to review. My reviews include the evaluation based on our rubric, as well they outline my reasons for choosing
these two apps and the related learning that can occur through their use.
Prior to this assignment I had started looking more in to the use of educational apps with my students. I questioned how one could find an app that would best meet both the teachers and students’ needs. Through the introduction of a range of different evaluation rubrics and the creation of one that met not only mine but our groups needs I now have a means by which to evaluate a range of apps.
Most students are involved daily in the use of mobile devices. They use then to access both the web and apps. As educators we need to look at ways to meet the needs of 21st century learners. The questions: How do we engage and motivate our students? How can we personalize their learning? What better way then allowing them to use devices that they see almost as an extension of themselves. But of up most importance is finding content, apps, which are of highest quality; whether it is subject based or for presentation of ones learning. This is where evaluation rubrics come in to play.

Blog Posts
Learning Outcomes:
The following document outlines the purpose of the blog posts and lists each of the blog posts' topics and guiding questions. The expectations, along with what is outlined below, was that we included in each post a related image and info-graphic.
Learning Outcomes:
- Be familiar with common terms, definitions and elements related to mobile learning and gaming environments.
- Demonstrate basic competency with design and implementation within a variety of mobile learning and gaming environments.
- Develop and design intentional learning activities suitable for the appropriate mobile learning and gaming environments and the learner i.e. incorporation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and selection of strategies and resources appropriate for environment, learners and learning outcomes.
- Integration of current cognitive learning and educational gaming theory and examination of current research around best and emerging practices.
- Develop practical and technical skills in all phases of concept, development, design, implementation, etc. within mobile learning and gaming environments.
- Develop skills to optimize learning experiences through personalization based on characteristics, needs, stages of development, current personalized learning mandates, and misconceptions.

Reflecting is the best way to articulate ones learning and understanding. In each of my blog posts, the purpose of which was self -reflection, I have covered the topics and "guiding questions" as outlined above as well as answered the following e-portfolio reflection guiding questions:
- What have I learned ?
- Why is it important to my future learning?
